To mark the occasion, representatives from each class attended a special event together with guests to see an exhibition of the international school project work . During the event our school choir entertained everyone with three International songs and Councillor Weinberg presented pupils with the award.

We developed our school curriculum to enable us to plan at least ten different activities with an international theme. These included special days such as European Day Celebration when the children learnt about food and cultures of Europe. Different classes focused on different countries and made flags, tasted food, read stories in different languages and listened to music.
We also took part in a postcard exchange with schools in 54 different countries in the world. The children took pride in designing their own postcards and writing about life in the Uk. Equally their eyes lit up when we received postcards from many countries including, Russia, Australia, New zealand, USA and India.

We have taken part in a project with a school in Italy and this enabled the staff and the children to focus on the culture and lifestyle of that country. Children worked on The Sleeping Beauty project and reflected on their learning. Art work across the two schools was shared as was a video of a role play of the story. The children learnt to evaluate each other's work and give positive feedback.

Year 4 pupils took part in a project with a school in the USA. The pupils compared their own lifestyle with that of the children in the USA using a monitored email system. They learnt about each other's interests, hobbies, likes and dislikes and compared a day in their lives as well as exchanging notes on their cultural backgrounds.

Working towards this Award has helped us to develop valuable local, national and International links giving us opportunities to enable our pupils to not only to excell academically but to see themselves as global citizens. These are the school’s Pupil Advocates. These children have been interviewed by staff and governors for this role and had to apply and meet a job selection criteria. We were looking for good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively. These pupils give up half of their free time and support other pupils in the dining hall and playground. They are paid £10 per term in the form of gift vouchers . We expect this scheme to have the following impact:
· Help new pupils settle into the school quickly and make friends at playtime
· Help younger pupils adapt to the dining hall routines
· Help younger pupils remember table manners and etiquette
It also supports the Pupil Advocates personal development and instils attitudes of responsibility as a preparation for secondary school. The Advocates compliment the work of the School Council whose role is to listen to the views of children and represent those views ensuring teachers take those ideas into account.
Watch this space for news from the Advocates and the School Council.

Autumn Fair

Message from Mrs.Buxton
Thank you very much to everyone who was able to attend the autumn fete last Saturday. Children proudly wore their traditional costumes and shared with the audience their thoughts on how they felt when they wore these costumes and why the costumes were important to them. Indeed, some of the costumes were specially made for the evening as everyone wanted to produce their best. Parents commented favourably on the high standard of the children’s work and they enjoyed seeing the cultural variety in the performance.
During the short interval, parents had an opportunity to taste food from different parts of the world. The food had been contributed by the school staff for the parents. It was great to organise an event that brought the school community together.

Report by Mrs Kambo

Sleep Over -11th June 2010

Our Friday sleepover for year 3 and year 4 pupils was a great success. Over a hundred and twenty pupils stayed and there was a fantastic range of activities organised for them including sports and arts events. We also had a camp fire and singing. We know some children organised their own midnight feasts! These sort of events help develop a wide range of life skills including independence and teamwork. A thank you to all the staff of the school who gave up their time so readily. Just to
inform you of an event during the first week back.
We will be celebrating St George’s day on the 23rd of April.
St George is the patron saint of England and on the 23rd
we will be asking children to come into school in
uniform with a splash of blue. This could be a blue
shirt, a blue ribbon or blue shoes. In the playground
pupils will be taught to play traditional English games
such as jacks, clapping games and rhymes, skipping
and so on. If any parent is able to support the
playground activities please let the school office know
your availability.
Thank you.

Our Belonging Posters

This is a small sample of the posters were created by groups of pupils accross our school on the theme of belonging and community

Our Belonging Posters on PhotoPeach

Traditional Dress & Multilingual Day - Friday 19th March 2010

Our pupils will have the opportunity to come to school in Traditional Dress. The children will prepare oral presentations about their dress and will explore their own identity and think about what it means to belong somewhere- especially as they live in the UK. From each other they will learn about the diverse nature of our world and develop greater awareness. The children will then work together in groups and each class will produce posters on the theme of belonging. Prizes will be awarded to the best posters.

We value our rich linguistic diversity and promote the love for language learning. Therefore we have organised a whole school multilingual event in the afternoon. The children will have taster sessions in different languages of the world. This may be in the form of a dual language story, a song, or a game organised by the staff.

Our very supportive parents will provide samples of food from a variety of cultures. All children will have the opportunity to taste foods from different parts of the world making it a truly memorable international experience.

Our Chinese New Year Celebrations

Chinese New Year celebrations have taken a firm place in our cultural calendar especially with a link being established with a primary school in Beijing. Staff are preparing for our second exciting study visit to our partner school in Beijing. Study visits such as this enrich the teaching and learning experience and help instill respect, understanding, tolerance and build community cohesion.

Earlier in the week children from our school took part in a live Redbridge- Beijing Videoconference held at the Teachers' Centre. They were thrilled to meet the Mayor of Redbridge who first addressed the vidoeconference and then spoke to the children about their presentations.

A Chinese performance arts group also visited our school. Children thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance and taking part in the Lion Dance and the Ribbon Dance workshops. "The workshop was really good. It was like a behind the scenes thing of the lion dance. Next time I see a Chinese lion dance Iwill think of this workshop." (A quote from one of our year 6 pupils)

We have had a whole school focus and every class has been involved in the celebrations. It gives

us an opportunity to bring real first hand experiences that children can learn from - ranging from making dragons and taking part in a dragon dance, making stirfry, calligraphy, tangrams, making lanterns, lucky money envelopes,Chinese fans, taking part in Tai Chi and choreographing

a sequence of ribbon dance.

Welcome back to the new academic year.

P.T.A -Autumn Fair Saturday 26th September 2009 from 11am until 2pm.
We hope you and your family will be able to attend.
Activities include;
Go-Karting, Face painting, Bouncy Castles, Balloon race, Food Stalls .
Books , toy , jewellery and clothing Stalls.

School News

Hello everybody, my name is Riya and I am going to tell you about year 6’s trip to the Bloomsbury theatre last week on Thursday to watch the Jungle Book. Well at the theatre we sat down and waited for 20 minutes for the show to begin, when the show started a lady wearing a black robe came in with a puppet which I think was Mowgli and started acting after that Sheer Khan came bla bla bla then they kill him in the end, but one of the songs they did was cheesy because they sung soldierboy but converted it into Jungle boy kinda cheesy right? Anyway after that we went back to school and went home so confusing.
But this week it was Chinese New Year and 4 Chinese people came to our school Redbridge Primary School. 3 people did a flexible dance and 1 girl played an instrument that took her 13 years to learn, I don’t think I could play that. Just to finish I want to wish all you Chinese people out there a Gung Hay Fat Choy which means for you English people happy new year Bye!
Riya (Year6)

What’s happening in Redbridge Primary School

The Year 6’s are going on a trip to see the Jungle Book at Bloomsbury theatre which we already went to but that time we saw Danny the Champion of the World. It was a very exciting and dramatic production where lots of props were used. Next the Year 3 and 1’s had a road safety show, I was told it was very funny but they learnt how to cross the road safely. The Year 5’s are visiting the William Morris Museum to learn more about William Morris wall paper design. The Year 2’s went to the Museum of London to find out about the Great Fire of London. They were lucky as they got to dress up and role play. The Year 4’s went to see the Jungle Book on Wednesday and they had a great time. On Thursday next week, there will be no podcasting because of the trip but I will tell you more about my trip next time.

Kristy Islam 6SJ

Upcoming Christmas Events By Prem

Ø Making Christmas cards – 17th December
Ø Christmas lunch – 17th December - Mmmmmmmmm
Ø Children Parties – 19th December
Ø Last day of school – 19th December
Ø Holidays – 20th December to 6th January

Performance

On the 10th and 11th of December 08 we had a Christmas show called ALL AROUND THE WORLD. Unbelievably today is our final day at Chao Yang Primary.

As scheduled, we went to observe an English Language lesson being delivered by an English speaking Chinese Teacher. She demonstrated fantastic use of the interactive whiteboard and her skills to teach English as an additional language. We saw stimulating use of the features and tools found on the interactive whiteboard in order to achieve the learning outcomes. She used team games, point systems and lots of surprise elements. The team game in particular allowed for use of repetitive language from peer to peer. We also saw children using the interactive whiteboard independently and with great confidence and enthusiasm.

We then had the opportunity to observe a maths lesson delivered in Chinese to a Grade 1 class (6-7 Year olds). The teacher’s warm manner was evident throughout this session. She smiled at the children and clearly had very high expectations. Again the use of visual images on the interactive whiteboard was successful in meeting the intended learning outcome. The children were fully engaged and used practical apparatus to enhance their grasp of number pairs to ten.

In our opinion both of these teachers showed elements of excellent teaching within their field.

It was then our turn to deliver English Language lessons in the style in which we would normally deliver a literacy session back in the UK.

At lunchtime we were pleasantly surprised with traditional Chinese dumplings served with broccoli and vinegar. Very tasty they were too.
Another excuse to practice our chopstick skills! Redbridge Primary staff, be ready for your first INSET in the use of Chopsticks!!

Later important dialogue took place between our partner teachers and ourselves. This was a great opportunity for us to reflect on our practise. We have also developed a promising plan for the future development of this project.

It was incredibly overwhelming when the headteacher of Chao Yang Primary entered the staffroom, laden with huge gift bags, to wish us farewell. The subsequent photo sessions and fond goodbyes from the staff touched us deeply.

Off to Silk Street tonight, to barter and avoid being conned…….

Our Diary for Wednesday 15 th october

Wednesday 15 th October

Dear Diary,

Our day started early. We left the hotel at 7:25 am and arrived at the school twenty minutes later in time for the morning exercises. It was amazing to watch the whole school perform the routine in unison. They all completed a series of exercises in tight rows at the same time without a single child putting a foot wrong. The children were all very enthusiastic and proud. A PE teacher lead the whole school via the use of a microphone and a raised platform. A little while later we were all escorted to a conference hall within the school. This was very grand and layed out in anticipation of a lot of visitors. Little did we know that Mrs Kambo and Miss Bellis from Fullwood Primary were going to deliver their art lesson there!! School officials from around Beijing arrived to watch a traditional Chinese art lesson delivered by the Chao Yang art teacher who is graded as excellent, then immediately after to watch the English art lesson, and to compare the two. They were focussing on the use of the Interactive Whiteboard within the lesson. Mrs Kambo and Miss Bellis did an amazing job and did the Borough of Redbridge very proud. Lunch was….. different! The pre-packed meal came in a sectioned tray and consisted of vegetables, rice, egg with tomato, meat and a heart shaped item which we were told was made from wheat. We were also served a vegetable soup and a very refreshing yoghurt drink, which tasted much like the Indian yoghurt drink called ‘lassie’. It tasted so good that Mr Spriddle had two!! After lunch we presented our school to a selected group of children who had a very strong grasp of the English language. The children watched a PowerPoint presentation which introduced our school to them. They got to see Mrs Buxton the Governors and all the exciting things that happen at Redbridge Primary School such as the summer fair, sports day and our after school clubs. Mrs Kambo also discussed the bookmaking sessions that we have at Redbridge. The children were flabbergasted that this entailed parents coming into the school to work with their children. Miss Lambri then presented our use of PSHE within the curriculum showing the children the use of the circle time egg. She also presented the photographs of the school council which the Chinese children were desperate to look at. She also illustrated how we allow our children to empower their own learning through the use of self evaluation and other reward systems such as smiley faces. You’ll be pleased to know that we have also observed a use of reward systems such as having group leaders and start charts. Finally Miss Lambri showed off work samples from the children in class 2SL, they were very impressed indeed. Meanwhile Mr Spriddle was teaching his grade 5 class. This involved the Chinese pupils watching the pre-recorded messages from Redbridge students in 5RS and 2SL and then responding to these questions in English whilst being recorded. Mr Spriddle delivered this lesson to a class of 60!! Well done Mr Spriddle. Later that day we were given the opportunity to observe our partner teachers. They were working from textbooks to teach the children English. This was fascinating as the children will automatically repeat any sentence spoken by the teacher back in English. We finished the day by planning with our partner teachers ready for our literacy lessons that we will be delivering tomorrow…….

Tuesday 14th October - Extra Pictures from China

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257114253864318578" style="DISPLAY: block; We began by meeting the Deputy Head and the English speaking teacher from our partner school – Chao Yang Experimental School. Teachers from Fullwood Primary and ourselves awaited their arrival in the hotel restaurant. Everybody was ready to give their best impression to our hosts and this created an atmosphere of great importance. We were chauffeur driven to Chao Yang through the very busy, noisy and jammed Beijing roads. The school has three buildings and today we were shown some parts of one building. We saw classrooms for children aged six to twelve years old. As well as normal classrooms this school also has rooms dedicated to arts and crafts. For example we saw rooms for model making, paper craft and clay work. The rooms were child friendly and set up with tables and bean bag seats so children could talk and enjoy this time together. These rooms are available during lunchtimes. A special vegetarian lunch was laid on for us and we are becoming quite expert at using chopsticks now. In the afternoon we had the pleasure of meeting the school’s headteacher. We presented the letter of invitation from Mrs Buxton along with all the maps, flags and other souvenirs of London to the head teacher. Everything was warmly accepted. She was particularly impressed with our school uniform, prospectus, policies and pupil workbooks. We were then introduced to our partner teachers, who were very enthusiastic about the project. Things certainly look good for the future of this partnership. Then it was time to think about lesson planning. Mrs Kambo has jointly planned an art lesson with Miss Bellis from Fullwood Primary. The lesson will have active use of the interactive whiteboard and will be delivered in English using our teaching strategies. Teachers from Chao Yang want to compare this lesson with that which would ordinarily be delivered by a Chinese teacher using their curriculum. The lesson that Mr Spriddle will be teaching involves collecting responses to the questions that our Year 2 and Year 5 children asked. Read our diary entry tomorrow to find out how these lessons went. Finally, we’ll tell you about the children we met today. They were happy, confident and welcoming, waving to us and saying “hello”. We also went into classrooms where children had the opportunity to practise their English by asking us questions. All the children were well mannered and seemed to really love being at school.

To be continued ....

Monday 13th October -Teachers Diary in China

Monday 13th October

Dear Diary,

We had a pleasant and smooth flight, and arrived in Beijing on schedule. As we left the plane and entered the airport in Beijing we all agreed that its atmosphere was very calm, this was in no small way down to the calming music being played in the background. We even had to catch a train to collect our luggage. The four minute wait for the train seemed far longer maybe it was the effect of our ten hour long flight. We travelled to our hotel in a luxury coach with our first lesson in Mandarin. Watch the video in our Fronter China Room (coming soon!). Our hotel is fabulously stunning and immaculately clean as is most of Beijing City. We are hoping to recover from our long travel in our spacious and very comfortable rooms. After unpacking we went for a group meal in a traditional restaurant. Did you know that soup is the last item to be served in a Chinese meal? There are no knives and forks; so we are fast developing our use of chopsticks! Oh what fun it is to eat rice with chopsticks!! After our meal, to keep us awake we went for a fascinating walk around Beijing City. Check out the images we have uploaded. We saw The Temple of Heaven and walked around Tiananmen Square. Lots of soldiers marched around. We saw the Forbidden City from a distance across an extremely busy road. The weather is similar to London although there was a lot of smog in the air this afternoon. We must catch up on our sleep now. So make sure you read and keep up to date with our next diary entry tomorrow…

Forthcoming China Visit!

I am looking forward to using this Blog in order to update and inform Redbridge Primary School on our up and coming visit to China.
